Development Solutions implemented a project, with support from the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition (RHSC) Innovation Fund Grant under the Menstrual Health Supplies Workstream, to develop policy guidance for harmonization of technical benchmarks for disposable and reusable sanitary pads in South Asia and Africa. A database of standards for menstrual products in LMICs, lessons on standards development and advocacy in LMICs and operational guidance for adoption of standards in India were developed as a result of this project. Interviews were conducted in India, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya to develop an in-depth understanding of the country level policies and processes and how they impact standards development but also helped understand the overall status of standards in LMICs and identify future pathways for harmonization through ISO.
The project was implemented in partnership with the African Coalition for Menstrual Hygiene Management (ACMHM), Menstrual Health Alliance India (MHAI), MHM Partners' Alliance Nepal and MH Hub. Other partners who supported the project include WASH United, the RHSC Menstrual Health workstream, Days for Girls International, Afripads, HECAF360 and individuals who have been supporting standards development in the focus countries.
