Why is a period called menstruation?

Menstruation or “menses” places its origins in the Latin word ‘mensis’ which means month, and this, in turn, has Greek origins in the word ‘mene’ which means moon. It was observed that the average length of a menstrual cycle (28 days) and a lunar cycle (29.5 days) were almost similar
