On the 8th of March, 2017, the organization Economía Feminista launched the campaign “Menstruaccion 8M”, whose objective, amongst others, was to demand that the government eliminate the IVA tax on menstrual hygiene products. They argued that the State must guarantee the ability of women and girls to hygienically manage their cycles as it effects health, equality, education and the environment.
The campaign was supported by various congressmen and congresswomen, who successfully advocated for a decrease in the tax from 16% to 5%. Nevertheless the campaign continues in order to completely eliminate the tax, and is being introduced to the Colombian Constitutional Court.
