Description

In 2004 a member of the Canadian Parliament Judy Wasylicia-Leis, introduced a bill to add feminine hygiene products to the list of zero-rated products, ultimately removing the goods and services tax (GST) from these items. The GST on such products was seen as a gender-based taxation, with the taxing of an essential and necessary product exclusively for women as unfair and discriminatory.
